PARAMEDICAL INTERNSHIPS

An internship is a valuable professional learning opportunity that provides practical work experience relevant to a student's academic discipline or career aspirations. It allows students to explore and develop their careers while acquiring new skills. For employers, internships present a chance to infuse fresh ideas and enthusiasm into their organization, nurture talent, and potentially create a pipeline for future full-time hires.

Internships are crucial in paramedical training, bridging theory and practice. They provide hands-on experience to paramedical workers in healthcare, allowing to observe procedures, interact with patients, and collaborate with professionals. This exposure enhances clinical skills, critical thinking, and communication.

Internships also deepen understanding of healthcare systems, teamwork, and the emotional aspects of patient care, fostering empathy. They improve resumes and offer networking opportunities, making students more competitive in the job market.

A quality paramedical internship should:

  • Include a part-time or full-time work schedule with no more than 25% of tasks being clerical or administrative.
  • Offer a clear description of the job or project involved in the experience.
  • Familiarize the student with the organization, its culture, and the assigned tasks.
  • Assist the student in setting and achieving learning objectives.
  • Provide consistent feedback to the intern.
What distinguishes an internship from cooperative education (co-op) and research experience?

>Internships are structured, supervised learning experiences in a professional environment that enable students to gain essential work experience in their chosen field. Typically, internships require a minimum of 120 hours, with at least 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and can be part-time or full-time during the summer.

>Cooperative education (co-op) positions are paid roles that necessitate students to alternate between full-time work and full-time academic study for at least two semesters. While many students are offered full-time employment with the organization after graduation, this is not guaranteed. For co-ops are ,some students express interest in them as practical learning experiences. If you are considering a co-op, it is advisable to consult with one of our Internship Heads to create a structure that best suits our students' needs.
