The courses available on SWAYAM are structured into four quadrants:

1. Video lectures,
2. Specially designed reading materials that can be downloaded or printed
3. Self-assessment tests including quizzes, and
4. An online discussion forum for addressing queries. Efforts have been made to enhance the learning experience through the use of audio-visual materials, multimedia, and advanced pedagogical techniques. In order to ensure that best quality content is produced and delivered, ten National Coordinators have been appointed.

Courses offered via SWAYAM are accessible to learners at no charge. However, those seeking a SWAYAM certificate must register for the final proctored examinations, which incur a fee, and must attend these exams in person at designated centers on specified dates. The eligibility criteria for obtaining the certificate will be detailed on the course page, and certificates will be awarded only if these criteria are met. Universities and colleges that permit credit transfer for these courses may utilize the marks or certificates earned in these courses for that purpose.
